SO-IL's Issey Miyake Store: Clean, Precise, Audacious (2026)

SO-IL has once again proven its prowess in architectural innovation with the recent completion of the Issey Miyake flagship store in New York City. This project, nestled within the neo-Gothic New York Life building, is a testament to the studio's ability to blend clean, precise, and audacious design with the brand's experimental fashion ethos. The store's open interior volume, mirroring the monumentality of the limestone exterior, is a sight to behold. But what makes this project truly remarkable is how SO-IL has seamlessly integrated key elements into the existing building, creating a harmonious and visually striking space.

One of the most striking features is the continuous aluminium rail spanning across the grand arched windows. This rail, along with giant studded-steel columns, creates a rhythm and symmetry for the perforated metal cases that house ceiling-mounted services and lighting. The majority of the floor area is left open, allowing garments to take center stage on custom freestanding aluminium rails and glass-topped, castor-mounted tables. This design choice ensures that the clothing, which changes with the seasons, remains the main focus, while the building itself takes a more subtle role.

The mezzanine level, accessed via a doglegged staircase suspended from the steel structure, adds a layer of intrigue. The slender profile of the treads and risers, paired with all-glass balustrades, gives the staircase an almost weightless appearance. This attention to detail extends to the materials used, with glass and aluminium being stretched to their limits, both visually and structurally, much like Issey Miyake's approach to clothing.

The repurposing of several titanium elements from the previous Frank Gehry-designed store is another fascinating aspect. While it was challenging to find fabricators who could work with titanium, SO-IL managed to preserve these pieces and display them prominently, adding a touch of history to the new flagship. The space also features a gallery where SO-IL will present an exhibition of its material explorations and collaborations from September 2026, further showcasing the studio's commitment to innovation and experimentation.

SO-IL's work on this project is a testament to the studio's ability to create spaces that are not only visually stunning but also technically impressive. The design seamlessly integrates the brand's experimental fashion ethos with the existing building, creating a harmonious and memorable shopping experience. In my opinion, this project is a prime example of how architecture can enhance and elevate a brand, and I can't wait to see what SO-IL does next.
